Relationship check in questions: weekly, monthly and more
A check-in is ten minutes, a couch and a few questions you would never think to ask on a normal Tuesday. Here is the ritual, plus 12 questions to run it with.
Relationship check in questions are short, specific prompts you ask each other on a schedule, usually ten minutes a week, so small things get said before they grow. Here are 12 to start with tonight; the full Couple Therapy, Soft Spot and After a Fight decks have hundreds more in the capybara cards app.
Good relationship check in questions are the ones you would never ask on a normal evening. "How was your day" happens on its own. "What did I do this week that made you feel looked after" does not, unless you make a tiny appointment for it.
That is all a check-in is: a regular ten minutes where you talk about the relationship instead of logistics. Same night, same spot, a few questions, and the rule that nobody is defending themselves. Done right it feels less like a meeting and more like a weekly reminder that you are on the same team. It also saves you from the other kind of check-in, the one that happens at 11 PM after something has already gone wrong.
Weekly relationship check in questions
Keep the weekly ones small and recent. You are not reviewing the whole relationship, just the last seven days. If a question drags up something bigger, write it down for the monthly one and move on.
- What is one moment from this week you want to put in the highlight reel?
- When did I have your back this week without you asking?
- What did you want to tell me this week but the timing was never right?
- What is one small thing I could do next week that would make your Monday easier?
More of these are in the Couple Therapy deck in the app. 154 more cards are in the Couple Therapy deck.

Monthly relationship check in questions
Once a month, zoom out a little. These work best with a longer evening and something nice to eat, because they take more than a one-line answer and you want the room to feel generous.
- Which evening this month would you replay exactly as it happened, takeout order included?
- What are you quietly carrying right now that I might not have noticed?
- Which small plan with me next month are you secretly counting down to, even if it is just a grocery run?
- What have I said lately that you are still thinking about, in a good way?
More of these are in the Soft Spot deck in the app. 89 more cards are in the Soft Spot deck.
Relationship check in questions for couples who feel distant
If the last few weeks have felt like roommates, do not start with "what's wrong". That question has no good answer at 9 PM on a weeknight. Start with the specific and the gentle, and let the first honest answer set the tone.
- When did you last feel like I was really listening, and what was different about it?
- What is one thing we used to do together that you miss, even if it sounds silly?
- Is there something you have been handling alone that I could take half of?
- What would make tonight feel a little closer than last night?
More of these are in the After a Fight deck in the app. 156 more cards are in the After a Fight deck.
How to run a 10-minute weekly check-in
Pick a fixed slot, like Sunday after dinner, and put it in the calendar so it survives busy weeks. Sit somewhere you are not facing a screen, set a timer for ten minutes, and take turns: one asks, the other answers fully, then you swap, and nobody argues with an answer during the ten minutes. End by each naming one thing you will do differently this week, then stop, even if it was going well. Stopping on time is what makes you want to do it again next Sunday, and a card deck makes the picking easy so you never spend the first five minutes thinking of what to ask.
A few things that help it stick: do not skip a week because things are fine, because the easy weeks are what make the hard ones possible to talk about. Do not turn it into a to-do list review; the dishwasher can wait. And if one of you gives a one-word answer, ask the same question a second time, slower. The second answer is usually the real one.
Nothing about this is dramatic. It is just ten minutes a week where the small things get said while they are still small, and a lot of long, happy relationships run on exactly that.
Quick answers
What is a relationship check in?
A short, scheduled conversation where you both say how the relationship is going, not just how your day went. Ten minutes once a week is enough for most couples.
How often should couples do a relationship check in?
Weekly for the small stuff and monthly for the bigger picture. If weekly feels like too much, start with every other Sunday and see if you miss it on the off weeks.
What questions do you ask in a relationship check in?
Specific, recent and easy to answer: what felt good this week, what you wanted more of, what you need next week. The 12 on this page are a start, and the Couple Therapy, Soft Spot and After a Fight decks in the capybara cards app have the full sets.
