Newlywed game questions: funny, for couples and older couples
The newlywed game is simple: you both write down what your partner will say, then compare and argue about it. Here are 13 questions to run it with, from silly to sweet.
Newlywed game questions are asked about your partner, not yourself: each of you guesses what the other will say, then you compare and score the matches. Here are 13 to start with tonight; the full Pop Quiz, Most Likely To and Couple Questions decks have hundreds more in the capybara cards app.
The best newlywed game questions are not about you. They are about how well you know the person next to you. One of you leaves the room (or just puts on headphones), the other answers a handful of questions about them, then you swap and compare. Every matching answer is a point. Every mismatch is a ten-minute argument, which is honestly the better part.
It works at a wedding shower with four couples, on a double date, or just the two of you on the couch keeping score on a napkin. The host reads, the couples write, and the reveal is where the noise happens. The trick is picking questions that are specific enough to have one right answer, but silly enough that nobody is actually hurt when their partner gets it wrong.
Funny newlywed game questions
Start here. These are the ones that get a laugh from the whole room before anyone has even answered, and they are safe enough for the table where the in-laws are sitting.
- What would your partner say is the pettiest reason you have ever gone to bed annoyed?
- Which notification on your partner's phone makes them flip it face down the fastest?
- What does your partner do in the car that they think you have not noticed?
- Which of your partner's "famous" dishes is secretly just okay?
More of these are in the Pop Quiz deck in the app. 150 more cards are in the Pop Quiz deck.

Newlywed game questions for couples
For a couples night or a double date. Everyone answers for their own partner at the same time, then you go round the room. These are "who is more likely" questions, so even a newer couple can play without knowing each other's whole history.
- Who in this relationship checks the door is locked twice, and who already forgot?
- Which of you would your partner say is more likely to cry at a dog food commercial?
- Who would your partner trust to pick the restaurant without a single veto?
- Who is more likely to still be awake at 2 AM watching something they will not admit to?
- Which of you would your partner say is more likely to lose the car in a parking lot?
More of these are in the Most Likely To deck in the app. 90 more cards are in the Most Likely To deck.
Newlywed game questions for older couples
Twenty years in, the misses get funnier, not rarer. These lean on history and the little routines you have both stopped noticing, which is exactly where the confident wrong answers come from.
- What would your partner say was the first meal you ever cooked for them, and was it edible?
- Which of your partner's parents' habits have they now fully adopted?
- What is the one household job your partner thinks they do more often than you think they do?
- Which holiday does your partner secretly consider the most stressful, however much they smile through it?
More of these are in the Couple Questions deck in the app. 267 more cards are in the Couple Questions deck.
How to run it so it feels like a game, not a quiz
Use paper or a phone to write answers down before anyone speaks, because out-loud answers get "corrected" halfway through. Score one point per match, be generous with near misses, and let the losing partner pick the next question. Keep rounds short (five or six questions each) and stop while people are still laughing. If you are hosting, a card deck saves you from writing questions the night before: one phone, swipe, read it out, and the host gets to play too.
A couple of house rules make it better. Ban the phrase "well, technically" from the comparing stage, because nobody has ever won an argument with it. Let the room vote when a pair cannot agree whether an answer counts. And if a couple is clearly sweeping the round, give the trailing couple a double-points question so it stays close until the end.
The score never really matters. What you remember afterwards is the one answer that was so wrong it became a nickname, and the one that was so right it made the whole room go "aww".
Quick answers
How do you play the newlywed game?
One partner steps out of earshot while the other answers a few questions about them, then they swap and compare. Every matching answer scores a point, and the arguing over mismatches is the actual game.
What are good newlywed game questions?
Specific and a little embarrassing: pet peeves, habits, who does what in the house. Avoid anything genuinely sensitive, because the whole room is listening. The Pop Quiz deck in the capybara cards app is built exactly for this kind of guessing.
Can you play the newlywed game if you are not newlyweds?
Yes, and it usually gets funnier the longer a couple has been together. Older couples miss on the small stuff just as often as new ones, which is the fun part.
