21 questions for couples: how to play, plus flirty and deep
The 21 questions game is the easiest date night there is: one phone, take turns, 21 questions, one pass each. Here is how to play and 15 questions to start your round.
21 questions for couples is a simple game: take turns asking, 21 questions in total, one pass each, and both of you answer. Mix flirty, deep and fun so the round never stalls. Here are 15 to start your round; the Couple Questions deck in the capybara cards app has hundreds more.
21 questions for couples is the game that needs no explaining, which is why it survives. You take turns asking a question, both of you answer it, and you stop at 21. Each person gets one pass for the whole round, and a pass costs something small (loser does the dishes). That is the entire rulebook. You can play it on a first date, on your tenth anniversary, in the car, on FaceTime, or in bed with the lights off, and it works differently every time because the answers change.
The hard part is not the rules, it is the questions. Twenty one is a lot to invent on the spot, and most rounds stall around question eight when someone says "umm, what's your favorite color." Mix three kinds, flirty, deep and fun, and the round carries itself. Here are 15 original ones to start with, sorted by kind.
21 questions for couples
- Which small thing I do on a normal weekday would you miss first if I stopped?
- What was the first thing you noticed about me that you never told me you noticed?
- Which of our friends do you think secretly roots for us the hardest?
- What's one plan you've already made for us in your head that you haven't said out loud?
Start a round with these, they warm the room up fast and nobody has to be brave yet. The third one is a good test of how closely you've both been watching your friends. More of these are in the Couple Questions deck in the app. 267 more cards are in the Couple Questions deck.

Flirty 21 questions for couples
- What outfit of mine do you wish I wore more often, and where would you take me in it?
- Which boring thing do I do around the house that you secretly enjoy watching?
- If you had to pick one of my habits to call cute in front of your friends, which one?
- What's one thing I say that you find more attractive than you let on?
Flirty questions work best around the middle of the round, once you've both stopped overthinking and started enjoying it. Keep eye contact on these; the answer is half in the face. More of these are in the Slow Burn deck in the app. 267 more cards are in the Couple Questions deck.
Deep 21 questions for couples
- Which worry did you carry about us in month one that now sounds silly out loud?
- Which version of you from the past would be most surprised by the life you have now?
- Which tiny favor would make your week easier that you keep not mentioning?
Save the deep ones for the last stretch, when the lights are low and the answers get honest. Three or four per round is plenty; more than that and the game starts to feel like a check-in, which is a different evening. More of these are in the Deep Questions deck in the app. 156 more cards are in the Deep Questions deck.
Fun 21 questions for couples
- If our relationship was a reality show, what would the episode title be for last weekend?
- Which household chore would you pay real money to never do again?
- Which pointless internet argument did you lose sleep over, and were you right?
- If we swapped phones for a day, which app would you open first on mine?
Fun questions are the reset button. Drop one in whenever a deep question lands heavier than planned, or when you notice you've both gone quiet and are now just scrolling. More of these are in the Couple Questions deck in the app. 267 more cards are in the Couple Questions deck.
How to keep the round moving
Alternate who asks every single time, so nobody feels interviewed, and let the person who just answered choose the next question. Keep a running count out loud, it builds a little drama toward question 21. Use a timer if you must: ninety seconds per answer keeps the game at 21 questions instead of 21 monologues. If you don't want to think up the next one, put a card deck between you and tap; the round runs itself and the questions are better than the ones you'd improvise at 11 PM.
Quick answers
How do you play 21 questions as a couple?
Take turns asking, 21 questions total, and each person gets exactly one pass. Answer every question yourself as well, and keep the answers short so the round finishes in one sitting.
Does 21 questions have to be 21?
No. Couples usually stop around 21 because it is long enough to get past the easy answers and short enough to finish before bed. Play to 10 on a weeknight if that is all you have.
Where do I get the rest of the 21 questions?
This page gives you 15 as a taste. The capybara cards app has the full Couple Questions, Slow Burn and Deep Questions decks, so you can tap for the remaining six, or play a whole new round.
