Deep questions to ask your partner, friends or anyone
Deep doesn't have to mean heavy. The best deep questions to ask take ten seconds to answer and still tell you something real. Here is a short set for partners, friends, a guy or a girl.

Good deep questions to ask are short and concrete: one real memory, one honest choice, no essay needed. Ask your partner about a moment they felt proud, ask friends what they miss, ask a crush what calms them down. Start with the 17 below; the full Deep Questions deck is in the capybara cards app.
Most lists of deep questions to ask are the kind that make people freeze. "What is the meaning of life" is a great question for a philosophy class and a terrible one for a Tuesday night on the couch. Nobody has a quick answer, so nobody answers.
The questions here work differently. Each one asks for a single memory, place or choice, something you can answer in about ten seconds. The depth comes after, when you ask "why that one?" and the real story comes out. That's the trick: a small question with a big follow up.
Ask them when you're side by side, not face to face. Walking, driving, cooking, lying in the dark. It's easier to be honest when nobody is staring at you waiting. Answer every question yourself too, and if someone wants to pass, let them. Deep only works when it feels safe.
Deep questions to ask
The all-rounders. These work on a partner, a friend or someone you met last week. None of them need a long think, but every one of them has a story hiding behind the first answer. Let the person finish, then ask for the part they skipped.
- Which year of your life would you happily live through one more time?
- Which stranger was kind to you on a bad day, and what exactly did they do?
- Which song from a road trip as a kid could make you tear up on a bus today?
- What's the best piece of advice you ignored and later wished you hadn't?
More of these are in the Deep Questions deck in the app. 156 more cards are in the Deep Questions deck.

Deep questions to ask your partner
With a partner, deep questions don't need to be about the relationship. Some of the best ones are about who they were before you met. For more, we wrote separate lists of deep questions to ask your boyfriend and deep questions to ask your girlfriend.
- When did you last feel really proud of yourself, even if nobody noticed?
- Where did you hide as a kid when you wanted the whole house to forget you?
- What's something you only started enjoying after you met me?
- Which of your habits came straight from one of your parents?
These land best late, when the lights are low and the phone is face down. Even after years together, at least one answer will be news to you.
More of these are in the 3 AM deck in the app. 155 more cards are in the 3 AM deck.
Deep questions to ask friends
Friends usually know the funny version of your life. These get to the other half, without turning the night into a group therapy session.
- Which friendship from school do you wish you'd kept?
- What's a moment you were secretly scared but acted completely fine?
- Which version of yourself do you think we'd all like most: twelve, eighteen or now?
Go around the circle and let everyone answer before anyone comments. The order matters less than the listening. And if a friend gives a surprisingly honest answer, don't turn it into a joke straight away. Say thanks, then share your own.

Deep questions to ask a guy
Guys often open up more when the question is practical. Ask about a moment, a place or a person instead of a feeling, and the feeling usually shows up on its own.
- Where do you go, or what do you do, when your head is too loud?
- Who is the one person you'd call if everything went wrong tonight?
- Which skill did you learn alone from YouTube videos at 2 AM?
Deep questions to ask a guy you like
If it's early, keep it lighter: the place he feels most at home, the song that got him through a bad month. Real, but easy to answer on a second date or over text.
More of these are in the 3 AM deck in the app. 155 more cards are in the 3 AM deck.
Deep questions to ask a girl
Same rule: specific beats abstract. Ask about something she can picture, and give her time to answer. If she laughs before she answers, that usually means the real answer is coming next, so wait for it.
- Which compliment from years ago do you still remember word for word?
- What makes a place feel safe to you the second you walk in?
- Which mug, blanket or hoodie would you grab first if the house was flooding?
Deep questions to ask your crush
With a crush, one deep question per conversation is plenty. Follow it with something light so it never feels like an interview. Our questions to ask your crush list has easier openers if you need a warm up.
More of these are in the Soft Spot deck in the app. 89 more cards are in the Soft Spot deck.
How to keep a deep conversation going
- Ask "why that one?" It's the only follow up you ever need.
- Share first. If you answer before them, the question feels like an invitation, not a test.
- Let silence sit. A pause usually means they're deciding whether to tell you the real answer.
- Stop while it's good. Three great questions beat twelve rushed ones.
