Get to know you questions for couples: 13 light ones
New couples don't need the big questions yet. They need the small, specific ones that turn into stories. Here are 13, and none of them is 'what are you looking for'.
Good get to know you questions for couples are small and specific: their childhood cereal, their weirdest grocery habit, the food they refuse to eat. Small questions get stories instead of rehearsed answers. Here are 13 to start with; the Getting to Know deck has dozens more in the capybara cards app.
In the first few weeks, the best get to know you questions for couples are the ones that sound too small to matter. "What cereal did you eat as a kid?" tells you more about someone than "what are you looking for in a relationship," and it doesn't make either of you sweat.
Ask them while you're doing something else: walking back from dinner, waiting for the kettle, lying on the couch with a movie paused. Answer each one yourself too, because a question you won't answer is a test, and a question you both answer is a conversation. That's the whole method.
The 13 below are sorted by how much they ask of you: easy starters, funny ones, a few that go a little warmer, and a last round that leans flirty for when the evening is going well.
Get to know you questions for couples
The starter set. Quick to answer, impossible to answer badly, and every one of them leads somewhere. If the answer is one word, ask "wait, why?" and watch it turn into a story about their mom.
- What was your go-to cereal as a kid, and do you still secretly buy it?
- What's a word you only learned how to pronounce properly as an adult, and who corrected you?
- What's your most unreasonable grocery store habit that you refuse to give up?
- What's a food you refuse to eat that everyone else seems to love?
More of these are in the Getting to Know deck in the app. 149 more cards are in the Getting to Know deck.

Funny get to know you questions for couples
For when you've done the polite ones and want to see them laugh at themselves. How someone tells an embarrassing story about their own childhood tells you a lot about how they'll handle being embarrassed in front of you later.
- What's the most ridiculous thing you've ever bought at 2 AM and then had to explain to a delivery driver?
- Which fictional character did you have a completely unreasonable crush on growing up?
- What's one rule you had as a kid that you only recently realised was weird?
More of these are in the Couple Questions deck in the app. 267 more cards are in the Couple Questions deck.
Deep get to know you questions for couples (the light kind)
"Deep" in week three means warm, not heavy. These go a little further without turning the couch into a therapy session, and they're the ones where you should probably give your own answer first.
- Who in your life gets your good news first, and how do you tell them?
- What's something small that your family does that you want to keep doing forever?
- Which teacher, coach or neighbour from when you were ten would be proudest of who you are now?
More of these are in the Getting to Know deck in the app. 149 more cards are in the Getting to Know deck.
Get to know you questions for couples as a game
Take turns, and whoever gives the most boring answer has to answer a bonus question of the other person's choosing. These lean a tiny bit flirty, on purpose, so they belong at the end of a good night rather than the start of a first date.
- What was the moment on our first date when you decided there would be a second one?
- Which of my texts so far have you reread more than once?
- If I showed up at your door right now with takeaway, what are you hoping is in the bag?
More of these are in the Slow Burn deck in the app. 90 more cards are in the Slow Burn deck.
How to ask without it feeling like a job interview
- One at a time. Ask, listen, react, let it wander. If you're on question six in ten minutes, slow down.
- Trade answers. Give yours first for anything that might feel exposing, especially the family ones.
- Let something else choose. A card deck takes the pressure off completely: one phone between you, tap, read it out, both answer. The question came from the app, not from you, so nobody feels interrogated.
You don't need to get to know everything about each other this month. You need a steady supply of small questions and the habit of actually listening to the answers. Thirteen is a good first week.
Quick answers
What are good get to know you questions for couples?
Small and specific beats big and serious. A question about their childhood cereal or the last thing they Googled gets a real story; a question about their five-year plan gets a rehearsed answer.
When should new couples ask get to know you questions?
Any time you're already doing something else together: walking, cooking, waiting for food. One or two a day in the first few weeks works better than a long list on a third date.
Is there an app with more get to know you questions for couples?
Yes, the capybara cards app has the full Getting to Know deck plus Couple Questions and Slow Burn, hundreds of cards on one phone. The 13 on this page are a sample.
