Questions to ask your husband: fun, sweet and a little nosy
You can be married for years and still not know what he bought with his first paycheck. These are short, specific questions that get a story out of him instead of a shrug.
The best questions to ask your husband are short and specific: the chore he secretly enjoys, the song he knows every word of, the childhood rule he is glad you don't have. Here are 13 to try tonight; the full Couple Questions deck has hundreds more, one tap each, in the capybara cards app.
Good questions to ask your husband are not the big ones. "Are you happy?" gets a nod. "Which chore do you secretly enjoy?" gets a confession, a defense and ten minutes of talking. Specific beats serious every single time.
Ask them when his hands are busy and his guard is down: cooking, driving, folding laundry, the ten minutes before sleep. One question, your own answer too, then follow whatever comes out. Thirteen are below, sorted by what you need them for.
Questions to ask your husband
Start here. These work on any night, with no setup and no mood required. If he answers in one word, ask "wait, why?" and watch the real answer show up.
- Which chore do you secretly enjoy and would never admit at a barbecue?
- If you could move one thing from your childhood home into ours, what is it?
- Which TV couple are we most like, and which one of them are you?
- Which snack do you hide somewhere in this house, and is it still there?
More of these are in the Couple Questions deck in the app. 267 more cards are in the Couple Questions deck.

Questions to ask your husband to get to know him better
Married people stop asking these because they assume the file is complete. It isn't. He has twenty years of life you weren't there for, and most of it has never come up because nobody asked the right small question. These do that job.
- What was the first thing you bought with money you earned yourself?
- Which smell drops you straight back into being ten years old?
- What's a rule your parents had that you're quietly glad we don't?
More questions like these are waiting in the Couple Questions deck in the app. 267 more cards are in the Couple Questions deck.
Questions to ask your husband for fun
Flip it around. These are about you, and he's being graded. Be generous with partial credit, and let him quiz you back afterwards so it stays fair. Husbands who claim they "never notice anything" tend to score surprisingly well on this section, which is its own kind of sweet.
- Without looking, what color are the towels in our bathroom right now?
- Which song do I always sing wrong, and what words do I use instead?
- Name the three apps I open first every morning, in order.
- What do I do with my hands when I'm about to lose an argument?
More of these are in the Pop Quiz deck in the app. 150 more cards are in the Pop Quiz deck.
Questions to ask your husband to reconnect
For the weeks when you've been coworkers more than a couple: same house, shared calendar, zero eye contact. Nothing heavy here, just a way back to noticing each other. Ask these with the TV off.
- What did I do this month that you noticed but never mentioned?
- Which room of the house do you like me best in, and why that one?
- If we got one free weekend with no plans and no chores, what's the first thing you'd want us to do together?
More of these are in the Soft Spot deck in the app. 89 more cards are in the Soft Spot deck.
How to ask without it feeling like a quiz
The fastest way to kill a good question is to ask the next one before he's finished. A few habits keep it a conversation instead of a performance review.
- Lead with your own answer. "I'd bring the kitchen table from my mom's house. You?" lands softer than a cold question with a pause after it.
- One a day beats ten in a row. Text one at lunch, ask one over dinner, save the sweet one for when the lights are off.
- Let the phone ask. With a card deck, the question comes from the app, so neither of you is the interrogator. He swipes, he reads it out, you both answer.
The goal isn't to collect answers. It's to be surprised by someone you see every day, and to let him be surprised by you right back. Thirteen questions won't get you all the way there, but they'll get you off "how was work" tonight, and that's the hard part.
Quick answers
What are good questions to ask your husband?
Good ones are concrete and quick: a specific memory, a snack, a song, a habit. The more specific the question, the harder it is to answer with 'I don't know'.
How do I get my husband to actually answer questions?
Ask one at a time, give your own answer first and react to what he says instead of moving on. A card deck helps because the question comes from the phone, not from you.
Where can I find more questions to ask my husband?
The capybara cards app has the full Couple Questions, Pop Quiz and Soft Spot decks, hundreds of cards in all, with a 3-day free trial. The 13 above are a taste.
