Questions to ask your wife: sweet, fun and funny ones
She has plenty to say. Most husbands just ask questions that can be answered with 'fine'. These can't, and a few of them will get you a look.
The best questions to ask your wife are specific enough that 'fine' is not an option: the gift she still talks about, the day off she'd plan, the shirt of yours she'd toss. Here are 13 to start tonight; the Soft Spot deck has dozens more, one tap each, in the capybara cards app.
Most questions to ask your wife fail for the same reason: they're too big. "How are you feeling about us?" is a lot to answer while loading the dishwasher. "Which of my shirts would you throw out tonight?" is not, and it will get you the same honesty with more laughing.
The trick is to be specific and a little playful, and to go first. Tell her your own answer, then ask. These 13 are sorted by what you're going for: sweet, fun, making her day, or just funny.
Questions to ask your wife
The everyday ones. Good on a walk, in the car, or during the ad break. None of them need a special occasion, which is exactly why they work on a Tuesday.
- What did I do this week that made you fall for me a little, even if it was tiny?
- Which photo of me on your phone do you look at more than you'd admit?
- Which of my laughs is your favorite: the polite one, the real one or the one that scares the dog?
- What's something I said years ago that you still quote in your head?
More of these are in the Soft Spot deck in the app. 89 more cards are in the Soft Spot deck.

Questions to ask your wife for fun
Now she gets tested. These are about you, and she's answering under pressure. Fair warning: wives usually win this round by a wide margin. Score honestly, argue the close calls, and let her test you back so you find out how much you've actually been paying attention.
- What's the one meal I'd order at every restaurant if you let me?
- Which of my shirts would you throw out tonight if I wasn't looking?
- What do I always say I'll do this weekend and then never do?
More of these are in the Pop Quiz deck in the app. 150 more cards are in the Pop Quiz deck.
Questions to ask your wife to make her happy
These aren't about getting information. They're about her hearing that you're paying attention. Ask one, then actually do something with the answer this month. The question is nice; the follow-through is what she'll tell her friends about.
- If I planned you a whole day off from everything, what's the first hour?
- Which of your wins this year did you want a bigger fuss about?
- What's a tiny luxury you'd never buy yourself but would love to be handed?
More of these are in the Soft Spot deck in the app. 89 more cards are in the Soft Spot deck.
Funny questions to ask your wife
For the nights you want her laughing before bed. Expect to be the punchline in at least two of these answers, and take it gracefully. The funnier her answer, the more she trusts you to laugh at yourself.
- If our marriage got a reality show, what's the title and who's the villain?
- Which of my habits would you report to a hotline if one existed?
- Which household object have we had the longest-running feud over, and who's winning?
More of these are in the Couple Questions deck in the app. 267 more cards are in the Couple Questions deck.
How to ask without it feeling like a quiz
Nobody wants to be interviewed in their own kitchen, and a list of questions read off a phone screen can feel exactly like that if you rush it. A few things keep it light:
- Go first. "I'd throw out your grey hoodie. Which of mine goes?" is an invitation. The same question cold is a test.
- React, don't advance. If she says the villain of the reality show is your mother, that's the conversation now. The next question can wait.
- Let the phone pick. With a card deck, the question comes from the app, so it's never you putting her on the spot. One of you taps, reads it out loud, both of you answer. It also means you don't have to remember any of this list.
You don't need to get through all 13 tonight. Two good ones and a real conversation afterwards is a better evening than the whole list. She doesn't need the big talk tonight. She needs to be asked something only you would think to ask, and then to see you listen to the answer. Start with one.
Quick answers
What are good questions to ask your wife?
Ones that can't be answered with a shrug: a specific memory, a tiny luxury, a habit of yours she'd report. Specific questions get stories; general questions get 'fine'.
How often should I ask my wife questions like these?
One good one a day beats a long list on a Friday. Ask it while you're both doing something else, and answer it yourself too so it feels like a conversation.
Is there an app with more questions to ask your wife?
Yes, the capybara cards app has the full Soft Spot, Pop Quiz and Couple Questions decks, hundreds of cards you tap through on one phone. The 13 on this page are a sample.
