21 questions: to ask a guy, a girl or your crush
Twenty one questions, answered honestly, one at a time. Here is a small taste of the 21 questions game for a guy, a girl, your crush and your friends.

21 questions is a game where two people take turns asking each other questions until 21 are answered, honestly and one at a time. It works in person or over text, with a guy, a girl, your crush or friends. Here are 16 to start; the full decks are in the capybara cards app.
21 questions is the game everyone has played at a sleepover or in a late night text thread. The rules are tiny: you take turns asking each other questions, you answer honestly, and you stop at 21. The magic is that you learn more in twenty minutes than in a month of small talk.
The hard part is coming up with the questions. Most people burn through the obvious ones (favorite color, dream job) by question five and then stall. The fix is to ask small, specific things that come with a story attached. That's what the list below is for.
This page has 16 original questions, sorted by who you're playing with. That leaves you five short of a full game on purpose. The rest are in the app.
You can use them in person, on a call or as 21 questions over text. Mix sections freely: a couple of get to know you questions first, then the round for whoever you're playing with. Ask one, wait for the full answer, then let them ask you one back. That's the entire game, and it's why people have been playing it since flip phones.
21 questions to get to know someone
Start here with anyone new. Easy to answer, impossible to answer without a story.
- What snack did you hide from your siblings as a kid, and where did you hide it?
- Which app on your phone would be the most embarrassing to show a stranger right now?
- What's the most useless skill you are weirdly proud of?
- Which song from middle school do you still know every single word to?
More of these are in the Getting to Know deck in the app. 149 more cards are in the Getting to Know deck.

21 questions to ask a guy
Guys usually answer short. These are designed to make the short answer impossible, because each one needs a story to explain it. If you're already dating him, our 21 questions for couples go a step further.
- What's the dumbest thing you ever did to impress someone, and did it work?
- Which video game character would you trust to babysit your dog?
- Which kitchen appliance do you own but have never once used?
More of these are in the Getting to Know deck in the app. 149 more cards are in the Getting to Know deck.
21 questions to ask a girl
These skip the job interview stuff and go straight to the details she'll actually enjoy telling you. Laugh at the good answers and share your own version back.
- Which outfit from your past do you secretly still think was iconic?
- Which celebrity have you defended way too hard in an argument?
- If your friends had to describe you using only a snack, which snack would it be?
More of these are in the Getting to Know deck in the app. 149 more cards are in the Getting to Know deck.
21 questions to ask your crush
This round is a little flirty, but still easy and safe. Ask one, let them answer, then let them ask you one back.
- Which emoji do you use so much it should pay you rent?
- Which song would you put on if we were driving somewhere with no plan?
- What's one tiny thing someone could do that would instantly make your day?
More of these are in the Slow Burn deck in the app. 90 more cards are in the Slow Burn deck.
21 questions to ask friends
Even best friends have blind spots. These dig up the stories you somehow never heard.
- Which of our friend group's inside jokes do you secretly not understand?
- Which school trip do you still bring up at every hangout?
- If our friendship had a theme song, what plays when we walk into a room?
More of these are in the For Best Friends deck in the app. 147 more cards are in the For Best Friends deck.
Why the 21 questions game works
Most conversations stay on the surface because nobody wants to be the one asking weird questions. The 21 questions game gives you permission. It's a game, so asking about someone's childhood hiding spot or their most used emoji feels normal instead of nosy.
It also forces turns. You can't just interview someone; you have to answer too. That back and forth is why it works so well with a crush, a new friend or someone you've been texting for a week but barely know. By question 21 you know the small stuff that usually takes months to find out.
A few tips before you start:
- Go small first. Light questions early, bigger ones later.
- Follow the good answers. A follow up doesn't count as one of your 21.
- Answer your own question too if they ask you to. It keeps it fair.
- Stop while it's fun. You can always play round two tomorrow.
The 21 questions game over text
Over text, 21 questions is even better, because nobody can see your face while you think. A few rules keep it fun:
- One question at a time. Never send a list.
- Take turns. You ask, they answer, they ask, you answer.
- One skip each. After that, you have to answer.
- Voice notes for the good ones. Half the fun is hearing how they laugh while answering.
If it gets late and the answers get longer, that's the game working. Don't rush to question 21.
Short of a full round? The app has the rest
Sixteen questions gets you most of the way, but a real round needs 21, and a good night usually needs a second round. The capybara cards app has the full decks: Getting to Know has 149 cards, Slow Burn has 90 for your crush and For Best Friends has 147, with new cards added over time.
Open a deck, tap once for the next question, read it out, then pass the phone or flip it on FaceTime. Nobody has to think up question 13 on the spot, and the shuffle means you never get the same card twice in a row.
Quick answers
What are good 21 questions to ask?
Pick questions that are quick to answer and come with a story: a childhood snack, a weird skill, a song they know every word to. Small specific questions get you further than big serious ones.
How do you play 21 questions over text?
Take turns sending one question at a time until each of you has asked 21. Answer honestly, no skipping more than once, and ask for a voice note when the answer is a good one.
Where can I find more questions for 21 questions?
This page has 16 to start you off. The full Getting to Know, Slow Burn and For Best Friends decks are in the capybara cards app, one tap per card.
Is 21 questions a flirty game?
It can be. With a crush it naturally gets a little flirty, but with friends or someone new it's just a fun way to learn the small stuff fast.
